Minecraft Honors Technoblade With Launcher Update Tribute

Beloved YouTuber and Minecraft content creator Technoblade recently died of cancer, and developer Mojang has honored the internet personality in a new launcher update. Technoblade, real name Alexander, was well-known for his livestreams and participation in the Minecraft survival server Dream SMP. Technoblade was a beloved part of the survival sandbox's community, having taken part in events like creating a Minecraft Bop-It controller, and Mojang has now recognized his unfortunate passing.

Over more than a decade on YouTube, Technoblade made a name for himself with dedicated and often humorous Minecraft gameplay videos. For example, one notable video from early in the content creator's career saw him beat the survival game in Hardcore Mode using a racing wheel as a controller. In 2019 Technoblade rose in popularity after participating in online Minecraft tournaments hosted by fellow YouTuber Keemstar. Technoblade also became associated with other YouTubers like MrBeast and Dream, having beaten Dream in a series of friendly competitions to earn the crown of "best Minecraft player." Minecraft In September 2020 Technoblade competed in the Minecraft Championship, a massive event which drew around 500,000 viewers across Twitch and YouTube.

Technoblade sadly died of metastasized cancer in June 2022, and Minecraft (via Twitter) has paid a touching tribute to the internet icon. In a tweet Mojang expressed that the studio was "heartbroken" over the loss of Technoblade, explaining that he "meant so much to our community and brought so much joy." To honor the young Minecraft champion, the game's Java Edition launcher has also been updated to contain a pig wearing a crown. This imagery has become strongly associated with Technoblade's Minecraft avatar, a Pigman wearing regal garb and a crown, and it now serves as a reminder of one of the game's most cherished figures.

We have been trying to find the words, but all of us here at Minecraft are heartbroken over the loss of Technoblade. He meant so much to our community and brought so much joy. He will be missed dearly.

Technoblade's massive rise in popularity over the last few years coincided with an overall increase in the popularity of Minecraft gaming videos on YouTube. Minecraft In 2020 alone Minecraft content raked in a total of 201 billion views for YouTube, more than doubling the second-most popular game Roblox and its 75 billion views. The massive success of Minecraft on YouTube can likely be contributed to the game itself, with the survival sandbox experience allowing players to produce a vast wealth of original content. However, popular YouTubers like Technoblade, Dream, Keemstar and MrBeast also contributed to the amount of viewers regularly tuning in to watch Minecraft gameplay.

The loss of Technoblade is a massive loss for the Minecraft community as a whole, with the YouTuber's dedicated fanbase continuing to mourn his death. Mojang has spoken out to honor the young content creator while giving his iconic bejeweled pig a spot on the Java Edition launcher screen. Technoblade may be gone, but the tributes created by Mojang and countless fans ensure that the Minecraft champion will never be forgotten.
