Ten Years Later, A Unique Version Of Minecraft Was Rediscovered

An extremely rare early version of Minecraft, long thought to be lost, was discovered over ten years after its release. Minecraft Alpha 1.1.1 was released in September of 2010 for the first time in Java Edition. It was only available for three hours. Gaming archivists have now found it again.

There have been hundreds of versions of Minecraft over the years and fans have carefully preserved and archived the majority of them for reasons preservation. However Liberty is not free , called Alpha 1.1.1 or Seecret Saturday, was thought to be completely lost. It introduced fishing rods and sneaking to Minecraft. However, it was found to have a game-breaking bug which caused the screen to go completely gray. Liberty was released within hours.

The entire story of its rediscovery was revealed on Twitter by the user @lunasorcery (via Kotaku), who discovered the missing alpha. As Luna describes that Alpha 1.1.1 became a viral phenomenon or even a holy grail in the Minecraft archiving Discord Omniarchive, and none of them had ever expected to discover it.

Someone came across one of Luna's old tweets and inquired about it, and she discovered an old backup of minecraft.jar dated the same as Alpha 1.1.1's release date of September 18, 2010. Luna confirmed that the file was Alpha 1.1.1 and posted about it on Omniarchive and it was later taken down.

So I posted in Omniarchive and it wouldn't be understatement to say that some people noticed.

Just from the reactions, the reality of how big a find this is starts to set in. I feel like I'm shaking.
